If you’re not upset about Katniss, Tonto, or Kahn being played by white people, but you are upset about Annie being played by a black girl, you’re probably racist.
And by probably I mean definitely.
I am upset about…
wasn’t talking about that movie myself but the other ones you mentioned, I’m not for white people replacing any other ethnicity any more than I am a fan of Heimdall in Thor (acting was good character looked great but still leaves me scratching my head every time I see him) I just think it’s weird when the change happens at all, like what if Bruce Wayne was suddenly cast as a black man or Japanese? wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense but I could see Hollywood doing it anyway.
At the same time I don’t let it detract from my enjoyment of a movie, black Kingpin? That didn’t ruin Daredevil, the movie did that all by itself.
I’m pretty sure Bruce Wayne would get a hell of a lot more interesting as a black or japanese man, but that’s really just me being absolutely bored with Batman. Sure he’s fun every once in a while, but I really wonder if DC has forgotten about… pretty much anyone else in their line up other than Batman and Superman.
The changes like this to media like that are important and good and shouldn’t leave you “scratching your head” because seeing roles like that pop up more and more is SO important to pretty much everyone and just… makes things more interesting than “ANOTHER MOVIE WITH ALL WHITE PEOPLE. ISN’T THIS GREAT?”
Representation matters and is a beautiful thing. S’why I’m head-over-heels in love with Elementary. Lucy Liu as Joan Watson in that version of Sherlock Holmes just breathes sooo much life into a series that’s been done thousands of times and all kinda… end up being the same.
Her in that part not only brings the perspective of a Chinese American to the role with all the knowledge, history, and culture there in, but also the perspective of a woman with all that comes with being a woman. It changes the dynamic of the story so strongly that it’s like seeing the relationship between Watson and Holmes in a whole new light for the first time in years… and I really LIKE most incarnations of Sherlock Holmes!
ANYWHO. Getting a little off topic. The fact of the matter is… Idris Elba (the man who played Heimdall) should play every role ever. He’s an amazing actor and hot as the surface of the sun.
^ There is nothing about this I don’t agree with. Elementary is amazing and I could stare at Idris Elba for years.
I will throw in how when we have a movie with an all black or predominately black cast it’s called a “race movie” by news and media even if the movie isn’t directly talking about race at all, but when we have a film that’s entirely or almost entirely cast with white people it’s somehow not a “race movie”.
More fantastic commentary about the handling of movies containing people of color that I forgot in my sleepy rants.
The labeling of movies that feature all poc or predominately poc cast as a “race movie” when the movie has absolutely nothing to do with race? Yeah, that’s preeeeeetty bad, wrong, and racist. Also the labeling of such movies as “urban” is just as gross, because it’s an underhanded way to just say “a movie set in modern times… with an all-poc or predominately poc cast.” :\\\\\
